ABSTRACT

This study examined effects of family divorce on children academic performance: a case study of Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.Related literatures of eminent scholars’ views on the study were reviewed. A descriptive survey was employed to carry out the study. The population of this study comprised of all pupils in Ovia North East Local Government Area. One hundred (100) respondents were sampled for this study. To ensure a representative sample for this study, sampling was done using the simple random sampling technique.

 

The research instrument employed for this study was a self-structured questionnaire that sought information from the respondents from selected schools. The reliability of the research instrument was ascertained using test-retest reliability technique. The reliability of the retrieved instrument was ascertained using Cronbach Correlation Coefficient method. A reliability coefficient score of 0.76 was obtained. Data was collected from the respondents and analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency count and simple percentages.

 

Findings revealed that The behavior of children from broken homes has a negative impact on their academic stability. That there are numerous causes and problems of broken homes towards academic performance of students such as emotional distraction, financial obligation and so on.That effects of divorce have negative effect on children academic performance. There are proffered solutions to the effects of divorce on children academic performance such as organizing awareness seminars, educating the parents, teachers innovative and so on.Based on the findings stated above, the following recommendations were made; there is need for us to focus and invest more in the students who are the future generations. Parents should train their children in the ways and manner acceptable in the society. There is should be restrictions on what the children see on social media so as to prevent them from practising what they learn. Finally, Parents should always watch their children to be able to know the kind of friends they keep, parents should learn to understand each other to have a united family.
