ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of excessive alcohol intake among university students at the University of Benin, Ugbowo, Benin City, Edo State. The study aimed to address three primary objectives: assessing the extent of undergraduate students' knowledge about the effects of excessive alcohol consumption, determining the frequency of alcohol intake among students, and identifying the patterns of alcohol intake among the students at the University of Benin. The study employed a descriptive design using a multi-stage sampling technique. The target population consisted of 31,707 full-time undergraduate students from the fourteen faculties of the University of Benin for the 2022/2023 academic session. A sample size of 283 students was selected using simple random sampling and proportional representation across seven faculties. Data collection was conducted using a 20-item questionnaire titled “Effects of Excessive Alcohol Intake among University Students Questionnaire” (EEAIUSQ), which included demographic information and questions related to the study's objectives. The findings revealed a positive trend in students' awareness and behaviors regarding alcohol consumption, with a significant number demonstrating an understanding of the consequences of excessive alcohol intake and exhibiting responsible drinking habits. In conclusion, the study highlights an encouraging shift towards responsible alcohol consumption among University of Benin students, underscoring the importance of continuous education and awareness campaigns. Recommendations include encouraging ongoing educational initiatives, implementing targeted prevention programs, and developing comprehensive campus-wide policies to promote a safe and healthy environment.
