The liver is constantly exposed to xenobiotics which can hinder it's main functions, it a major role in detoxification and removal of endogenous compounds. Antidepressants are in full use by individuals and the health sector against anxiety disorder, one of its known mechanisms of action is selective serotonin inhibition reuptake (SSIR). In an attempt to treat this disorder, it has been recorded that sexual dysfunction could occur. Anthoclesista djalonesis (Sapo root) is a potent herbal remedy against sexual dysfunction. 150g of powered stem bark of Anthoclesista djalonesis was dissolved in 2.5 litre of ethanol, 15 male albino wister Rats were distributed into 4 groups (n=3) of which group 1 was the control group fed with water and feed adlibutum, group 2,3 and 4 were treated with 10mg/kg body weight of paroxentine for 7 days. 200mg/kg body weight of ethanol extract of Anthoclesista djalonesis was administered to group 2 while 50mg/kg body weight of standard drug (Tadalafi) was administered to group 3 for 21days. The result showed a significant increase (p<0.05) in albumin concentration across all the groups, bilirubin concentration in group 2 and Aspartate aminotransferase in group 4 when compared to the control group. There was no significant decrease (p>0.05) in total protein and Alanine aminotransferase concentration. From the result , ethanol extract of Anthoclesista djalonesis showed both hepatocellular protective effects and liver toxicity.
