ABSTRACT

Tetrapluera tetraptera is a medicinal plant that has been found to have several therapeutic effects for the treatment of convulsion, leprosy, inflammation, rheumatism, jaundice, and fevers. This present project aims to investigate the potential effects of ethanol Tetrapleura tetraptera (Aridan) extract on kidney function parameters in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) induced toxicity This study employ an animal model, in which 25 rats were subjected to intraperitoneal administration of CCl4 to induce kidney toxicity. The parameters include serum levels of urea, creatinine, and electrolytes. The experimental design consist of multiple groups, including a Normal control (Group 1), a CCl4-induced toxicity group without treatment negative control (Group 2),Group 3(Silymarin treatment), and two other groups treated with different doses of Tetrapluera teraptera extract, 250mg/kg (Group 4),and 500mg/kg (Group 5). One-way ANOVA software, Graph pad prism version 9 was used in statistical analysis the variables between all groups. Tetrapluera tetraptera extract elicited a significant reduction (p<0.05) in serum sodium, chloride, potassium, bicarbonate, and, urea, levels but no significant change in serum creatinine level compared to control group. Thus, these findings point to the potential therapeutic effects of ethanolic extract of Tetrapluera tetraptera in helping the kidney combat toxic metabolites may be dose dependent due to the fact that those treated with 250mg/kg showed more effects than that of 500mg/kg. Hence, these findings could be of significance in providing of insights on the therapeutic benefits of Tetrapluera tetraptera in combating kidney damages induced by CCl4.
