ABSTRACT
The research on the topic "Effects of Drug Abuse on Undergraduate students of the University of Benin" was carried out by the researcher to ascertain the extent to which undergraduate students of the University of Benin indulge in drugs and also to examine the effects of drug abuse on undergraduate students of the University of Benin. This is in order to mitigate drug abuse amongst undergraduate students of the University of Benin. There is no doubt that reduction in the extent to which students abuse drugs can result in good health and also reduce rate of crimes and improve academic performance amongst undergraduate Students of the University of Benin. The effects of drug abuse will help to provide useful insight and information on drug abuse and how to avoid abusing drugs and also been a addict. It will help reduce the hazard of drug abuse to the minimum among university of Benin undergraduate students and to enlighten students on how take precautions and also reduce the rate of school dropout due to drug addiction and abuse. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The study population involved 77,000 Undergraduate students in all fifteen (15) Faculties of University of Benin. The sample size for this study was 100 respondents who were randomly selected from five (5) faculties out of the 15 faculties in the University. The findings of the study revealed that Peer pressure makes it difficult to resist trying drugs and it play a great role in the initiation of drug use among students, it was observed that most students disregard prescription for over the counter drugs and some abuse hard drugs because they are not expensive to buy and hard drugs do not stimulate their cognitive abilities.students are triggered to take hard drugs as a result of what they see or hear on mass media and social media encourages students curiosity about experimenting with drugs and hard drugs can have negative impact on academics. More so, the study provides relevant materials for students and other researchers undertaking similar research performance.
