ABSTRACT

The study examined the effects of domestic violence on child development in Egor Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State. The objective of the study was to examine the impact exposure to domestic violence has on the cognitive development of children in Egor Local Government Area; to determine the emotional and psychological consequences of children who experience domestic violence within their households in Egor Local Government Area; to examine the influence of witnessing domestic violence has on the social development and behavior of children in Egor Local Government Area and to review and evaluate support systems and interventions available and its effectiveness in mitigating the effects of domestic violence on child development in Egor Local Government. The cross sectional research design was adopted for this study. 384 copies of questionnaire were distributed to respondents in Egor local government areas in Edo state. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, and mean with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0. The empirical result revealed that domestic violence can cause physical and emotional harm to children; children who are victims of domestic violence often go through anxiety, emotional distress and that children exposed to violence are more likely to have difficulty in school,. The study recommend that disclosures of domestic violence should be taken seriously by police, the judiciary, legal services, and health and welfare services, and responded to consistently and appropriately; and that there is need for practitioners to build on the resilience and coping strategies of children and mothers to help them cope with and recover from the effects of violence.
