ABSTRACT

A study on the influence of different potting media sowing depth and soaking time on the germination of castor bean plant (Ricinus communis L) was carried out in the screen house of Department of Crop Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin City in February, 2022. The treatments involved three soaking time (0,12 and 24 hours), three potting media (Poultry Manure, Top soil and Top+ Poultry Manure 1:1) and three sowing depth (2,4 and 6cm) in 3x3x3 factorial arrangements fitted into a complete randomized design (CRD) with three replication. Variables measured included plant height (cm), number of leaves, stem girth (cm), leaf length and leaf width at 2,4 and 6 weeks after sowing. Results shows that potting media had significant (P<0.05) influence on plant height (cm), stem girth, number of leaves, stem girth (cm), leaf length (cm) and leaf width (cm) throughout the sampling period with top soil having the tallest plant (26.50 cm) and poultry manure having the highest values. The influence of sowing depth and soaking time was not significant on every measured variable.
