ABSTRACT

Caffeine (found in coffee, tea, soft drinks, etc.) is arguably the most consumed stimulant in the world. It is consumed by individuals of different ages, cultures, and races. Caffeine has been reported to impact female reproductive hormones. Hormonal imbalance has implications for women’s reproductive health and hormonal-dependent cancers. However, there is limiting and conflicting research on the relationship between caffeine intake and premenopausal women’s level of reproductive hormones. The aim of the present study was to investigate the chronic effects of the administration of caffeine on blood estrogen and progesterone levels in female Wistar rats. Twenty (20) rats weighing between 150g and 200g were divided into four (4) groups of five (5) rats per group; normal control rats, low dose group treated with 150 mg/kg caffeine, the medium-dose group treated with 250mg/kg, and high dose group treated with 500mg/kg. Rats were treated for four (4) weeks. Thereafter, blood samples were collected from the inferior vena cava using 5ml syringes. The blood samples were turned into a plain container for hormonal profile tests. Results from the hormonal assay were analyzed using the graph pad prism statistical software 8.1. Differences between groups were assessed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).
