Abstract
The study critically examined the effects of child neglect on the social development of pupils in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State and the consequences on the individual child and the society in general. Also, it evaluated the place of the family and the community as catalysts in the whole process of raising a child from infancy. The study adopted the Attachment theory by John Bowlby and Psychosocial theory by Erik Erikson, questionnaire was used for data collection and the data was analyzed using frequencies, percentages and tables.
It, however, revealed that provision of material needs for children does not necessarily mean all their needs are being met, therefore, emotional needs are as important as physical or material needs. It further revealed that with an adequate supply of affection, the child will likely develop into a responsible adult. The study recommended that parents should be diligent in providing the physiological needs as well as psychological needs of their children during the early years to enhance the overall development of the child.
