ABSTRACT

Azanza garckeana is a tropical wild plant that is found in Africa. It produces edible fruits that are used as food and herbal medicine. The fruits are used for the treatment of gonorrhoea, menstrual problem, anaemia and infertility. It is also used as an aphrodisiac. This study was carried out to investigate the biochemical effect of aqueous-methanol pulp extract of Azanza garckeanafruit on sex hormones in male Wistar albino rats. Twenty-four (24) male Wistar albino rats weighing between 102g-126 g were grouped into the control group and three experimental dose groups of 50, 300 and 2000 mg/kg body weight. The animals were acclimatized for two weeks. Those in the experimental groups were orally administered the aqueous-methanol pulp extract of Azanza garckeana fruits for fourteen (14) days. The effect of the extract on the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, testosterone, progesterone, prolactin, luteinizing hormone and estradiol, were assessed using standard methods. Results obtained from this study show a non-significant increase (p>0.05) in the levels of luteinizing hormone and prolactin. The result also showed a non-significant increase (p>0.05) in FSH levels for the experimental group rats administered 50 and 2000mg/kg of the extract compared with those of control, however there was a significant decrease in the experimental group administered 300mg/kg body weight of extract.Testosterone levels of rats administered 50 and 300mg/kg body of the extract had a non-significant decrease (p>0.05) compared to the control, while the group administered 2000mg/kg body weight of the extract increased albeit non-significantly (p>0.05). Estradiol levels in rats administered aqueous-methanol pulp extract of Azanza garckeana at doses of 50mg/kg Bwt showed a non-significant decrease (p>0.05), while those administered 300mg/kg Bwt and 2000mg/kg Bwt were non-significantly higher(p>0.05) compared with those of control. The finidngs are indicative that the aqoues-methanol pulp extract has an effect on sex hormone in male wistar Albino rats.
