ABSTRACT
Toxicity of aqueous leaf extract of Acalypha wilkesiana in wistar rats was investigated. Oral administeration of extract up to 2000mg/kg. No Mortality was recorded during this toxicity study, which may due to the fact that the plant is non-toxic. There was a slight progressive reduction (p<0.05) in serum sodium concentration with increasing doses of the extract above 1000 mg/kg and a significant decrease in serum potassium and chloride on initial administration of 1000mg/kg respectively when compared with the control group in phase one. A progressive change in urea was also observed with every increasing dose. Indeed, creatinine is known as a good indicator of renal function. The kidney functional indices: serum concentrations of creatinine was not significantly changed following administration of aqueous leaf extract (p<0.05) when compared with the control group in phase one.
