ABSTRACT
Kalanchoe is a medicinal plant largely used in folk medicine for various treatments; it is distributed through out india and cultivated in gardens and wild on the hills of north-western india, deccan and bengal(nandkarni a.k., et al, 2005). This study was undertaken to evaluate the gastro-histomorphogical changes caused by the acqeous extract of kalanchoe pinnata leaf on adult wistar rats with ethanol induced gastric damage.thirty (30) wistar rats were divided into six groups; A, B, C, F, E and F with each group containing five wistar rats. Group A was the control group and each rat was given grower's mash and water only; group B, C, D, E, and F were made to fast for 24 hours, then given 1ml of absolute ethanol to induce gastric damage; each group were then treated differently as follows; group B was treated with 0.5ml (low dose) of K. Pinnata leaf extract; group C was treated with 1ml (high dose) of K. pinnata leaf extract; group D was treated with omeprazole drug dissolved in water; group E was left to recover naturally with zero therapeutic administration, group F was sacrificed 24 hours after administering alcohol; all administrations were given using a galvage orally for 28 days respectively with exception to the control group and group F. The body weight of all treated animals ( group A to F) were taken before commencement of administration and before sacrifice. After the 28th day of administration, animals from group A to E were all sacrificed. Blood samples were collected and immediately transferred to edta sample bottles for oxidative stress analysis. The stomach of each rat was harvested and immediately fixed in 10% formal saline for tissue procwas sacrificed 24 hours after administering alcohoicrographs of processed tissues were taken and analyzed using light microscope. The study suggests that kalanchoe pinnata has an ameliorative effect against alcohol induced gastric damage and its effect is dose dependent. At high dose, its effect could be compared to that of omeprazole so it can be used as a substitute to omeprazole to fight gastric ulcer and prevent chronic stomach ulcerations.
