ABSTRACT

Yohimbe tree has been utilized in most parts of Africa as an aphrodisiac especially among the Bantu people. The aim of this study is to investigate ' lie effects of mixed diet containing Pausinystalia yohimbe stem bark on the Liver of Adult wistar rats following treatment with carbon-tetrachloride

Twenty (20) Adult Wistar rats were housed in the Department of Anatomy, University of Benin. The animals were allowed to acclimatize for a period of two weeks before commencement of experiment. Pausinystalia yohimbe stem bark were harvested from compartment 56 Olcomu national Park, Arhakhuan, Udo. The extract was prepared by freeze dried method at the department of medical biochemistry of the University of Benin. The rats were randomly assigned into a Control group (A) and five treatment groups (B, C, and D) containing five (5) animals each. Rats in Group B were administered with 30% CCL4 only; group C was administered with 500 mg/kg body weight of Pausinystalia yohimbe extract o ily; Group D were administered with : , 500 mg/kg body weight of Pausinystalia yohimbe extract and _ 30% CCL4 . At the end of the 28th day’s experimental period, the rats were sacrificed under chloroform anesthesia. A midline y incision was made through the walls of the abdomen and the liver was dissected out and fixed in 10% buffered formalin for routing histological procedure. The result obtained showed that lead T acetate caused marked degeneration of the hepatocyte compared to the control slides. The histology of liver tissues of rats treated with CCL4 showed hepatocyte degeneration with widespread fat vacuole. These vacuoles were also seen in fie liver tissues of rats co-treated with Pausinystalia yohimbe extract and CCL4. It was therefore concluded that Pausinystalia yohimbe % exhact did not ameliorate the effect of CCL4 on the liver tissue.
