ABSTRACT

Background: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA), a painful joint disorder, significantly impairs quality of life along with physical and psychological well-being of individuals affected by the disease. Exercise has been shown to provoke psychological responses that involve an increase in positive affect and positive mood, as well as a reduction in negative affect in patients with chronic musculoskeletal problems. However, such evidence among individuals with KOA is limited.

Aim: The aim of this study therefore was to compare the acute effects of 10 and 15 minute bicycle ergometry exercise on affect, mood and pain in individuals with KOA

Method: Forty-six participants with KOA met the inclusion criteria and were randomized into two groups (10 minutes aerobic exercise group (n=23) and15 minutes aerobic exercise group (n=23). Outcomes including affect, mood and pain were assessed at baseline, pre-, post-, 10 minutes post- and 20 minutes post-intervention using the International Positive and Negative Affect Scale -short form, Visual Analogue Scale and Visual Analogue Mood Scale, respectively. Data were analyzed using mean, median, Friedman’s ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U test and generalized estimating equation (GEE).

Results: The mean age of participants was 67.09±1.85years, 94.23% were females. Ten minutes of aerobic exercise had significant effect on PA (p=0.001, Es=0.25), NA (p=0.001, Es=0.44), mood (p=0.001, Es=0.58) and pain (p=0.001, Es=0.73) across the five time points of the study. A 15-minute aerobic exercise also had significant effect on PA (p=0.001, Es=0.25), NA (p=0.001, Es=0.49), mood (p=0.001, Es=0.45) and pain (p=0.001, Es=0.84) across the five time points of the study. There was no significant difference between groups and group-time interactions regarding effect of aerobic exercise on the outcomes (p>0.05).

Conclusion: Both 10- and 15-minutes single bouts of bicycle ergometry exercise had positive effects on affect and mood in individuals with KOA. Ten and 15- minute single bouts of bicycle ergometry exercise were comparable in their effects on affect and mood improvements in individuals with KOA.
