ABSTRACT

The growing impacts of rural-urban migration have raised great concerns among nations with about 80% of 185 countries developing policies aimed at lowering rural-urban migration. These problems lead the researcher to investigate effects and prospect of rural-urban migration on the rural development in Nigeria. A case study of Igwobazuwa, Ovia South West Local Government Area. The study adopted descriptive research design. The population in this research was the people living in Igbwozuwa, Ovia South West Local Government Area. 100 Household and family were selected as the research samples using simple random sampling. The method of data analysis employed was simple percentage and regression analysis. The research findings reveal that the causes of rural-urban migration are lack of infrastructure, absence of basic amenities, poor market, unemployment, insecurity and education. The findings also established that depopulation of rural areas, increase in local income and introduction of new skills and knowledge are effects of rural-urban migration on rural development and the solution to rural-urban migration are government provision of infrastructure, basic amenities, establishment of market, industries and schools. The research conclude that government should provide infrastructure, market, industries, schools and educate rural farmers on how to preserve farm products which will increase yield on agricultural products in the rural areas and increase in their financial income in order to discourage rural-urban migration. The research recommends that provision of mechanized method of agriculture through the institution of extension workers and government. It also recommends that Government should locate industries, markets in the rural areas.
