ABSTRACT

This research examined the effectiveness of teaching methods in the teaching of English Language in junior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The objectives of the study were to find out the various teaching methods used in English language, the effectiveness of the lecture methods on acquisition of English language skills; the role of explanatory teaching method in promoting acquisition of English language skills and the effectiveness of question and answer method on acquisitions of English language skills. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The questions sought to identify the various teaching methods used in teaching English language in Oredo Local Government Area and their effectiveness. Consequently, 195 copies of the questionnaire were distributed to teachers and students in public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area. The study employed descriptive survey design. Mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the data obtained. It was found that there are no significant differences in the effectiveness of different teaching methods and students' academic performance of Junior Secondary Students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The finding revealed that there are significant differences in the effectiveness of different teaching methods and students' academic performance of Junior Secondary Students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The study recommends that the methods used in teaching English should be more reinforced to promote the four skills of English language and the Ministry of Education should provide more supplementary and up-to-date materials for the teaching of English language. There is also need for seminars to train and update teachers' with the use of current methods in the teaching of English language in secondary school.
