this study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of rewards and punishment in promoting sport participation among secondary school students. Three research questions were raised and a stratified sampling technique was used to select hundred (100) students which was drawn from Boiling point secondary school, Benin city. The data were collected with questionnaire instruments and analyzed using simple percentage.
It was revealed that poor remuneration and rewards for performance or participation, lack of public appraisal of participation, poor welfare condition of students participating in sport, lack of knowledge of the benefits of participating in sport on the path of the parent and guidance, inhibit the effectiveness of rewards and punishment in promoting sport participation. Further findings of the study revealed that the lack of rewards and public appraisal of performance for student will lead to a reduction in the number of students participating in sport in secondary schools and also rewards and public appraisal of participation for the students is a source of motivation towards sport participation in the schools. More findings made it known that inadequate Punishment and rewards system in the schools will negatively affect students’ interest in sport and also that parent and guidance has a role to play to improve the effectiveness of rewards and punishment among students
This study therefore concluded that there should be a good rewards and Punishment system established in secondary schools , also student's performance or participation should be rewarded and publicly appraised. There should be a good welfare program for students participating or representing the schools in sport.
