ABSTRACT
Cerebral palsy mainly affects how the brain controls movement and muscles. It is caused when a problem occurs in the development of a child's brain before, during or soon after birth and this causes problems with things like movement, talking, chewing and swallowing of the child. In many developing countries like Nigeria, poor health system has been one of the factors affecting the rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy and other children with disabilities. A qualitative research methodological approach was used to understand and describe the effectiveness of rehabilitation services provided to children with cerebral palsy in Ogun state hospital, Ota. Purposive sampling was used to select 20 caregivers of children with cerebral palsy who attended rehabilitation service at the hospital using semi-structured interviews. The data collected was transcribed verbatim and translated from other languages to English. The study was analysed using thematic analysis. Six themes emerged, namely: caregivers’ experiences and beliefs; attitudes to care; compliance; impact of disability; support and identified needs. The findings of this study show the overwhelming challenges affecting rehabilitation services provided to children with cerebral palsy.
