ABSTRACT
This research work set out to determine the effect of work stress on employees’ productivity in the banking sector. This research sought to investigate the impact of role-overload on employee productivity in the banking sector, to ascertain the extent to which role-conflict affects productivity, to assess the impact of role ambiguity on productivity and to assess the effect of financial incentives on employee productivity. Three branches of First bank of Nigeria Ltd were selected and a sample size of 68 was drawn from a total population of 80 using the Taro Yamane sample size determination formula. Four hypotheses were tested using the SPSS 16.0 and Regression technique. Specific findings are: There is no significant relationship between role-overload and employee productivity in the banking sector, role-conflict does not affect productivity, role ambiguity has no significant effect on productivity and there is no relationship between financial incentives and employee productivity. This study recommends that the banking sector should invest in a stress management program that will help increase productivity, stress management techniques such as: exercises, enough sleep and well-balanced diet should be encouraged by bank managers especially during weekends and bank managers should create an enabling environment that engenders good relationships among employees. This would ultimately result in creating a friendly work environment for employees/staff.
