ABSTRACTS

The effect of sawdust substrate on the growth of Marasmius species and Ganodermal lucidum species was investigated. Sawdust from selected wood (cotton, dendrum, afara, rubber, delonix, albizia, mixed) were collected, dried and soak in 1000ml of water for 30mins, the extract from waste was collected and used to prepared media for the growth of Marasmius species and Ganodermal lucidum. Agar block of Marasmius species and Ganodermal lucidum were inoculated into petri dishes containing media from the wood substrates and incubated for growth. The growth of the mycelial of the fungi on the plates were measured daily. The results showed that daily mycelia extension growth on different substrates of Marasmius species and Ganodermal lucidum grows the best while some was least, the growth rate on Marasmius species and Ganodermal lucidum on selected substrates were observed, the effect of sawdust substrate of biomass on Marasmius species and Ganodermal lucidum. Cultural characteristics of growth on Marasmius species and Ganodermal lucidum grown on muchroom substrate, some were fluffy, wooly, thick, tomato, appressed, thin, etc. The mycelial density of the mushroom tested were either sparse, very sparse, moderate, dense, very desnse etc. The two mushroom Marasmius species and Ganodermal lucidum were able to utilize the wood waste to various level; from this work, it is evidence that wood extraction can be use for the cultivation of these mushroom. More importantly, it leads to employment generation and women empowerment.
