ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to ascertain the effect of some carbon sources on the vegetative growth of the fungus Auricularia auricula- Judae (Bull.)J. Schrot. Pure culture of A. auricular was gotten from the mushroom unit of Plant Biology and Biotechnology, University of Benin after which culture media supplemented with different broth as carbon sources, unto which the pure culture of the test fungus was expanded on aseptically; this evaluation was performed by puncturing the inoculum with an already sterilized cork borer and then the punctured part of the inoculum was collected carefully with an already sterilized loop and was inoculated at the center of the culture. This procedures was carried out for the four replicates of each supplemented medium after which they were transferred to the incubation room. The growth biometry was taken after 24 hours for 10 days. In this study it was observed that the medium supplemented with maltose dextrose had the highest growth in all the consecutive days, while the lowest vegetative growth was recorded in cell agar medium. From this study it has been observed that different carbon source has different influence on the vegetative growth, Therefore in the selection of substrate for spawning (vegetative growth Phase). Substrates with high amylase to amylopectin as choice substrate, especially for the cultivation of A. auricula.
