SUMMARY
The results of these studies have demonstrated that seeds ofMonodora myristica exhibit epigeal germination. The fresh seeds used in this experiment had high viability. Control seeds (C ) had the highest germination percentage but pre treating the seeds with tepid water for 24hours did not significantly influence germination percentage more than control but had greater influence on the speed and time of germination. Seeds soaked in tepid water for 24 hours had the highest germination rate (GR), shortest germination period, lowest mean germination time (MGT), and highest emergents at germination peak. It was also observed from the study that seeds soaked in tepid water for 24 hours perform best in all the growth parameters recorded. Whereas soaking M. myristica seeds in hot water should be avoided as the seeds pre-treated with hot water performed least in all the germination and growth parameters considered for this study. Likewise, M. myristica seeds requires open space (light) for good germination and early growth of the seedlings to occur.
According to this study, fresh seeds of M. myristica has high viability and is able to germinate without treatment but germination will be slower and require more time(10WAS). However, it was observed that pre treating the seeds by soaking in tepid water for 24hours exceptionally increases the speed and hastens the period of germination(5WAS).This time differnce is of great benefit to a silviculturist for faster nursery and plantation establishment.
