ABSTRACT
A study was carried out in 2023/2024 at the Department of Crop Science Screen House, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Ugbowo Campus, Benin City to evaluate the effect of Topsoil / Cattle dung media on the growth of cocoa seedlings. The trial involved three potting (TS+ CD 1:1, TS+ CD 1:2 and TS+ CD 2:1). Laid out in a completely randomized design and replicated three times. Data were collected on the physical and chemical properties of all potting media, plant height, stem girth and number of leaves at 6,10 and 14 weeks after sowing (WAS); and dry weights (Total dry weight, shoot dry weight, root dry weight and root: shoot ratio) were taken at 14 WAS. Results showed variation in the physical and chemical properties among the potting media and seedlings growth but total dry weights, shoot and root dry weight and root: shoot were similar among potting media. TS + CD 1:1 and 2:1 media produced the tallest seedlings (25.20cm) at 14 WAS but not significantly taller than plants in TS + CD 1:2 media. Seedlings in TS + CD 1:1 and 2:1 were thicker than those in TS + CD 1:2 media. For profit maximization, TS + CD 2:1 media is suggested for raising cocoa seedlings.
