ABSTRACT
This study was conducted between February and May 2022 at the Screen House of the Department oi' Crop Science, Faculty of Agriculture, and University of Benin, Benin City to evaluate the growth performances of Castor oil seedling in different potting mixtures, sowing depth and soaking time. This experiment involved three topsoil poultry manure mixture (TS + PM (1:1), T2 (Ts + PM (1:2) and T3 (Ts + PM (2:1). Three sowing depth (2, 4 and 6cm) and soaking time (0, 12 and 24 hrs). The experiment was laid out in 3 x 3 x 3 factorial arranged fitted into complete randomized design with three replication. Data were collected on fresh weight, dry matter and crop growth rate. Results showed that fresh weight, dry matter and crop growth rate varied among potting media, sowing depth and soaking time (TS + PM (2:1) had the highest dry matter and crop growth rate. Seed sown at 4cm depth had the highest crop growth rate. Soaking seeds for 24 hours before sowing had the highest fresh weight, dry matter and crop growth rate. The interaction of potting medium, sowing depth and soaking time was significant for fresh weight. The highest fresh weight was recorded in seeds soaked for 24 hours and sown in Ts + PM (2:1) at 2cm depth. The highest dry matter was produced from plants emerging seeds soaked for 24 hours and sown at 4cm depth in TS + PM (2:1).
