ABSTRACT

This research study investigated the effect of the parents’ socio-economic status on the academic performance of students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. 

The (3) research questions were raised to guide the study. The respondents comprised of seventy students (70). The research method that was used for this research study is the survey research technique. In organizing and presenting collected data, tables and percentages were used. This study was aimed at seeing how the socio-economic status of parents affect the academic status of their children in school in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. To solve the research problem, various methodology was used such as population of the study and sample and sampling techniques. The research instrument used in collecting data were questionnaires. The questionnaires were divided into two sections, Section A and B. Section A was designed to obtain demographic information from the respondents, while Section B comprised of items on the topic under investigation. The instrument was reviewed and validated by the project supervisor and other experts in the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. 

 

The findings of the study revealed that the parents’ socio-economic status has a critical role to play in the  academic performance of the students. It also found out that students whose parents have low socio-economic background has difficulties in accessing materials and resources needed for their study thereby limiting their academic performance. Based on the findings, the following were recommended;Government providing financial supports and scholarship, organising programmes for parent’s involvement in their children’s educational career, help provide learning materials to students, etc. This is needed in order to help the students who can’t do well as a result of a low parental socio-economic background to do well.
