SUMMARY
This study showed that Clarias gariepinus smoke dried with sample D (Ekki (Lophira alata), a hardwood, gave the least concentration of most PAHs detected compared to other fuel woods while Clarias gariepinus smoke dried with sample B Okpagha (Pentaclethra macrophylla), a medium-textured leguminous woody plant, has the highest concentration of most PAHs detected. It was also observed that PAHs detected were above minimum permissible limits for all treatments except Clarias gariepinus smoke dried with sample D (Ekki) due to the direct exposure of smoke from the fuel wood indicating that traditional smoking kiln ( Half drum used in this study). This has significant effect on the PAHs level and concentration in smoke-dried catfish.
