ABSTRACT

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the effect of soap effluent on soils amended with poultry manure. The experiment was conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture experimental farm, located at the back of the Faculty Building of the University of Benin, Benin City. The experimental design was completely randomized design with 5 treatments replicated 3 times. A general pollution was done using soap effluent, it was left for 2 weeks to equilibrate before application of poultry manure at different levels which includes 0kg/ha, 0.01kg/ha, 0.02kg/ha and 0.03kg/ha. Soil samples were collected and then analysed using a standard laboratory analytical method. Some of the physical and chemical properties analysed were pH, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, aluminium, hydrogen and particle size distribution. The result of the analysis showed that the pH reduce to 5.71, total nitrogen increased to 0.82g/kg, total organic carbon content increased to 29.9g/kg, available phosphorus increased to 13.6mg/kg. Exchangeable bases which includes; calcium reduced to 0.85cmol/kg, potassium reduced to 0.27coml/kg, magnesium reduced to 0.25cmol/kg and sodium level reduced to 0.13coml/kg. Electrical conductivity values reduced to 32.9µcm-1 with application of poultry manure. Exchangeable acidity value did not change with the application of poultry manure (H+=0.12cmol/kg and Al3+ = 0.5cmol/kg) The result from the experiment showed that application of poultry manure improved soil properties.
