ABSTRACT
The study was conducted in order to determine the effect of carbohydrates sources (from selected tubers) on the vegetative growth of the mushroom Auricularia auricula. The carbohydrate sources used in the study are Yellow yam, Water yam, Cassava, Cocoyam, Sweet potato and Irish potato. It was observed that all the media used supported the vegetative growth of the test mushroom. The highest growth rate was observed in Cococyam medium with agar with a mean of 6.15±0.15cm while white yam medium with dextrose agar had the least growth with the mean of 5.18±0.08. This study has shown that there was a significant difference between the control and the highest growth medium. It therefore implies that local carbohydrate sources can be used in place of the conventional Irish potato for the vegetative growth of Auricularia auricula.
