Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate effect of qualification of English teachers on performance of senior secondary school student in Ughelli North Local Government area of Delta state. Four research question were raised to guide the study
The population of the study comprised of three thousand (3000) in the twenty (13) public secondary schools in Ughelli North Local. The sample for the study consists of ten percent (10%) of the total population which is three hundred students (300) students drawn from five (5) secondary schools in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Edo State. The simple random sampling technique was used in selecting the schools’ secondary schools in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Edo State.
From the finding it was seen that the teachers’ qualification affects students’ performance in senior school certificate examination it was revealed that provision of better facility for teaching English language improve students’ academic performance. It was shows that regular studying, self-motivation, punctuality and regular class attendance, and hard-work and interest in a subject are factors that can improve the academic performance of students. it was seen that the students are confidents confident in writing second language, it was revealed that they encountered a lot of challenges while learning the second language. It was recommended that Teaching qualification must be seen as a pre-condition for entry into the teaching profession. Through the establishment of the. Teachers’ Registration Council (TRC) is in the right direction and should be enforced.
