ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of potting media and different watering regimes on the growth of celosia. The specific objectives were to evaluate the effect of soil treatment and watering regimes and their interaction on the growth of celosia. The experiment was carried out from January 2024 to April 2024 at the screen house, Department of Crop science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Benin, Benin City, Edo state, Nigeria. It involved preparing soil media, subculturing and multiplying Trichoderma sp using ground corn cob as substrate.  The experiment was laid out using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three treatments and three replications. Data was analysed using GENSTAT version 12 and the means were separated least significant difference (LSD). The statistical interference was made at 0.05 (5%) level of Significance. The result of the study showed that there was no significant difference between the effect of different watering regimes on the growth parameters of Celosia argentea such as; Plant height, leaf length, leaf breadth, root length, fresh weight and dry weight except collar girth where watering daily gave the highest collar girth (2.556cm) but not significantly different from watering every two and three days respectively. Untreated top soil (Ts) produced the highest mean for all parameters measured. It was recommended that Celosia argentea seedling can be grown using untreated soil and watering every 3 days.
