ABSTRACT
The research on assessment of the impact of poor waste management practices on environmental sustainability in Egor Local Government area of Edo state, provides an appraisal on waste management practice in the area coupled with its attendant negative externalities on the environment. It survey method which has to do with the use of questionnaire was employed to elicit responses from the target population. The objectives of the research involve the following, examine the effects of poor waste management practices on environmental sustainability in the study area: determine waste management practice perceive to be the most effective in the study area: assess respondents’ knowledge of waste recycling method; examine the perceived challenge of waste management in the study area; assess ways to improve waste management practice in the study area. the course of this research fair representation of male and female were observed to ensure unbiased representation on the research subject of waste management practice.
The research revealed private waste management practice to be the most desired method among the people. the study observed recycling method to be the best perceived method that could be adopted in the study area. The research revealed some of the respondents to have taken the initiative to sort waste into different constituents. Larger percentage agreed to have to sort out plastic materials from other forms of waste.
Moreso, the research disclosed irregular collection of waste to be the most serious problem associated with waste management in the area. on modalities to improving on waste management, effective management of the waste management board was advocated and that both the informal and formal waste management sector should be collaborative in function. The research disclosed that dumping of waste should be met with punishment. Hypothesis test 1, using point bi-serial correlation, revealed that effective management in waste collection has strong correlation with environmental livability, which in turn can enhance environmental sustainability.
In conclusion, waste management required a collaborative effort from both the government and a sundry in order to ensure sustainability in waste management.
