ABSTRACT
Herbs have always formed an integral part of human health and are used in the treatment of several human diseases. One of such species which have wide patronage of use is Phyllanthus amarus. This herb is in traditional medicine for more than 3,000 years. The plant has also served as lead for several experimental investigations that explored its phytochemical constituents and pharmacological uses. Phyllanthus (Euphorbiaceae) is a native genus of the American continent representative medicinal plant with very high number of species (more than 1,000) located in tropical and subtropical countries. The histological findings indicated that the treated sections of the liver showed hypertrophy of blood vessels, mild-severe infiltrate of chronic inflammatory cells and varying degrees of tubular necrosis when compared to the control sections and a section of the liver revealed hepatitis of the liver due to carcinogenesis induced by DMH. Effect of plant extract on TNFα correspond to normal CEA, compared to normal caspase 3, compared to normal, results from FBC compared to normal SOD, CAT and MDA. The study reveals that P. amarus extract works as an antioxidant agent and thereby preventing cell proliferation. Extract of P. amarus possesses chemoprotective activity. It is recommended that further studies aimed at fractionation of the leaf extract against colon, these observations should be carried out to investigate future pharmacophore (P<0.05 or P<0.05).
