Abstract
This study investigated the effect of parents academic background on academic performance of pupils in nursery schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. To guide the study, three research questions were drawn; Does parental academic background lead to low academic performance of pupils? Does the provision of educational needs by parents affects pupils academic performance? Does the learning environment influence the academic performance of pupils towards learning? The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised all pre- school teachers also considered to be parents in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample size of the study was fifty (50) respondents drawn from the population. The instrument for data collection was a well- structured questionnaire titled Effect of Parent Academic Background on the Academic Performance of Pupils in Nursery School Questionnaire (EPABAPPNSQ). The findings of the study revealed that parental academic background influence pupils' academic performance and the provision of educational needs by parents affects pupils' academic performance. Also, the learning environment influence the academic performance of pupils towards learning. The study recommended that teachers, educationist and leaders should create awareness to Parents on the importance of the home environment on their children's academic performance and Irrespective of parental background a seminar should be conducted to coach the parents on the need to develop interest on the progress of their children and to provide the necessary things for a better performance.
