ABSTRACT

Citrus sinensis is one of the most cultivated fruit with great benefits for humans in the world. Its fruit peel has several biological activities within them hypoglycemic, hepatoprotective, antimicrobial and antioxidant. The present study was aimed at the wound healing activity of aqueous extract of Citrus sinensis peel on wistar albino rats and effects on heamatological parameters. The sample was subjected to hot maceration method of extraction using distilled water. Nineteen wistar albino rat (139–234 g) of either sex were divided into five test groups were treated with experimental ointment (50mg/kg, 100mg/kg and 200mg/kg of aqueous extract), negative control were treated with Vaseline gel. Burn wounds were induced on dorsal area of rat bodies.Wound area measurement was carried out every four days for ten days. Heamatological screening was performed to identify possible significant differences between the treated and untreated wistar albino rats used for this experiment and also to compare the result with the use of Nitrofurazone drug at 2 mg/kg as positive control.Significant wound healing activity was observed with topical application of Citrus sinensis peel extract. Wound area reduction at day 8 of treatment was about 90% for all the treated groups when compared with the control. Furthermore, higher rate of wound contraction (100% on 9th day) was observed for all the treated groups except for the control which has not been completely healed. The Heamatological results showed that rats' platelet, white blood and red blood cells differentials had a significant increase at physiological intervals at graded doses of (50,100 and 200 mg/kg) treated groups of Citrus sinensis peel extract and reference control when compared with wound control.
