ABSTRACT

Over the past decades, herbal medicines have been accepted universally, and they have an impact on both world health and international trade. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder in the endocrine system. This dreadful disease is found in all part of the world and its becoming a serious threat to mankind’s health. There are lots of chemical agents available to control and treat diabetic patients, but total recovery from diabetes has not been reported up to date. Dialium guineense extract has been documented as a potential treatment for diabetes. The effect of this plant may delay the development of diabetes complications and correct the metabolic abnormalities by using variety of mechanisms. This study focuses mainly on the effect of ethanol stem bark extract of Dialium guineense on antioxidant enzymes. Analysis of the following parameters were made: Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), Malondialdehyde (MDA), Glutathione reductase (GSH) and Catalase 14days. Experimental wistar rats were distributed into 5 groups with five rats in each. Group 1 (Normal Control), Group 2 (Diabetic Control), Group 3(Metformin Control), Group 4(100mg/kg), Group 5(200mg/kg). The results obtained indicate that the concentrations of MDA and GPX increased significantly (p<0.05) and significant decrease in the activities of other antioxidant enzymes and concentrations of GSH (p<0.05). Similarly the effect of the extract and standard drug metformin on body weight increased significantly relative to diabetic group (p<0.05).Therefore, in may be infer that the extract did exert antidiabetic effect on the test group (diabetic rats) and also enhance oxygen radical scavenging activity of antioxidant enzymes.
