ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of methanol extract of Geophilia obvallata in SOD and catalase levels in CCl4 treated albino rats. A dose of 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg body weight of extract was orally administered to the rats and were observed for signs of or two weeks. The study was divided into 6 groups, Group 1 serves as the control group, Group 2 as CCl4 only, Group 3 as CCl4 and low dosage of extract (50ml), Group 4 as CCl4 and medium dosage of extract (100ml), Group 5 as CCl4 and high dosage of extract (150ml), Group 6 as medium dosage of extract only (100ml). The biochemical parameters studied includes activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD). During this study which lasted for 14 days, the extract, at doses of 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg bodyweight were administered orally to rats while control rats were given only tap water. At the end of the study, liver tissue samples were collected for analyses. In toxicity studies the poison (CCl4) did not induce death after single dose administration. The study carried out show that Geophila obvallata methanol extract only had significant change (p < 0.05) on group 4 (100ml/kg bodyweight) when compared with the control group. Geopilia obvallata maybe considered effective or curative against liver damage at a dosage of 100ml/kg bodyweight with promising applications in drug therapy.
