ABSTRACT

The study investigated the biochemical effect of methanol extract of the stem of Anthocleista djalonensis on the kidney status of paroxetine-induced sexual dysfunction in male wistar rats. 25 male Wistar rats were divided into five groups labelled A, B, C, D and E. Group A was control and Group D to G were induced with sexual xii dysfunction using paroxetine for seven days. Thereafter, Group D and E were treated with methanol extract of Anthocleista djalonensis and Group F was treated with Tadalafil for twenty-one days. Group G was untreated. After 21 days, the rats were sacrificed and blood was collected through cardiac puncture and the kidneys were harvested, homogenized, centrifuged and refrigerated. The following assays were carried out on the plasma;Creatinine, urea,Sodium ionChloride ion, potassium ion,Bicarbonate while superoxide dismutase(SOD) and Malondiadehyde(MDA) was carried out on the tissue. The activity and concentration levels of the assays were determined using standard techniques, the results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and a p-value lesser and greater than 0.05 was observed with different parameters for the different assays On kidney chloride, it was observed that there was a non-significant difference (p>0.05) when comparing the untreated group with other groups. On kidney sodium levels, it was observed that there was a non-significant difference (p>0.05) when comparing the untreated group with other groups. On kidney potassium levels, it was observed that there was a significant difference (p<0.05) when comparing the group treated with 100mg/kg methanol extract, the standard drug and the control group.
