ABSTRACT
This study investigated the effect of learning environment on the academic performance of secondary school students in English language in ovia North-East local government area of Edo state, Benin City. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, four (4) research questions were raised. The sample consisted of one hundred and twelve (112) senior secondary school students which were selected from five(5) secondary schools in Ovia North-East local government area of Edo state. The participants were selected using simple random sampling technique and data were collected using a questionnaire. The validity and reliability of the instrument were ascertained using the test-retest procedures. Simple percentages and frequency count were used to analyze collected data.
The result of the analysis shows that factors such as poor lighting and painting, air quality, noise, high level of carbon dioxide in classrooms, inconsistent temperature, seats and sitting arrangement as well as relative cold climate etc, are responsible for students' poor academic performances in English language in senior secondary schools. Based on the findings emanating from the study, it was recommended that government and stakeholders should ensure that the school learning environment should conforms to UNESCO standards, they should ensure frequent supervision of every school , overcrowding should be discouraged, they should ensure that there is adequate electricity supply and ventilation system. More also, government, school administrators, teachers etc should make sure that factors affecting the learning environment, should be properly taken care of inorder to enhance learning.
