ABSTRACT
Asthma is a situation where by an individual’s airway becomes irritated, swollen and narrow, producing excess mucus which makes breathing difficult. Kolaviron is gotten from the seed of Garcinia Kola Heckel commonly used in African Traditional Medicine for sexual enhancement, throat infections and fertility. Kolaviron has been shown to exhibit anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties in cell cultures, animal models of disease, and chemically induced toxicity. In this study, the anti-asthmatic effect of kolaviron on ovalbumin induced asthma and MUC2 gene expression in guinea pig animal model was evaluated. Kolaviron at all doses significantly caused an increase in the onset of preconvulsive dyspnea on ovalbumin induced asthma in guinea pigs (*P<0.05, ***P<0.001) when compared to control. In the expression of MUC2 gene, the result shows that albumin significantly down-regulated the expression of MUC2 gene (*p < 0.05) and up-regulation of MUC2 gene was seen at all dose level of kolaviron extract (25 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg) and salbutamol (0.5 mg/kg), they were statistically significant when compared to normal control at (*p < 0.05) and when compared to positive control (albumin) (# p < 0.05). In conclusion, kolaviron extract has anti-asthmatic activity, hence it is suggested for the treatment of asthma.
