ABSTRACT

Consumption of fructose has been increasing exponentially, which has caused an increase in the incidence of obesity and its related consequences. Because fructose is more pleasant and less effective at promoting satiety, it will encourage greater food consumption and change how lipids and carbohydrates are metabolized, which will speed up the rate of synthesis and accumulating of fats. According to accepted scientific practices, the effect of Irvingia gabonensisstem bark extract on antioxidant levels and lipid profiles in obese wistar rats was examined in this study. 42 Wistar rats in total were separated into seven groups, each with six rats, with the first group serving as the normal control group, the second as the negative control group, and the remaining groups serving as the experimental groups. The process of acclimatization lasted for 14 days. Fructose was used to create obesity by adding it to the water that was provided to the rats in groups two (2) through seven (7) and delivered morning and evening for sixty (60) days.Rats in groups three (3) through seven (7) received an oral gavage containing an Irvingia gabonensisethanol extract. In order to test the compatibility of the two treatments and look for any potential adverse effects, group 7 rats were given varying dosages of Irvingia gabonensisextract and 235mg of the drug Orlistat, which is known to lessen the effects of obesity and may even provide a cure.Lipid profile and oxidative assays was done to evaluate absorption level and from the results, there was no significant difference in total cholesterol and triacyl glycerides(TAG) but there was an increase in HDL-Cholesterol when compared with the group that was admistered 2mg Orlistat. Also, there was increase in Antioxidant activity which shows that Irvingia gabonensishas therapeutic potentials and is a good agent for the management and treatment of obesity related diseases.
