ABSTRACT
Garcinia kola (bitter kola) is a dicotyledonous plant belonging to the family of plants called Guttiferae. cure cough, dysentery, chest colds, liver disorders, diarrhea, laryngitis, bronchitis, and gonorrhea, the seed is used to prevent and relieve colic; it can also be used to treat headache, stomach ache and gastritis, it has also been reported for the treatment of jaundice, high fever. Vitamin C is an essential component of the human diet. Small amounts of ascorbic acid can prevent the deficiency disease, scurvy, while accumulation of high levels of ascorbate in plasma and tissues may protect against oxidative damage and limit inflammation. Aim of this present study is to investigate the effect of administration of Garcinia kola and vitamin C on the weight of male wistar rat. Forty-six (46) rats with weight 120g - 200g were divided into five groups of Nine (9) rats per group, (group 1) Control, (group 2) vitamin C supplement, (group 3) Garcinia kola 25mg/kg, (group 4) 50mg/kg and (group 5) 100mg/kg. Rats were treated for three weeks and their weight were taken at the end of each week. Difference between the weight of each group were assessed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Data were resented as mean ± Standard error of mean. P <0.05 were considered to indicate a statistical significant difference. Result were compared between control group, vitamin C and Garcinia kola groups. Result from statistical analysis shows that Garcinia kola brought about a significant increase in the body weight of the rats used but there was no comparative effect with Vitamin C on the body weights.
