ABSTRACT
Lipid profile is a blood test that measures the levels of different types of fat or lipid in the blood, these include cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density Lipoprotein (LDL). Ethanol extract of tetrapleura tetaptera was used to test the levels of fats in the blood. Twenty five (25) male wistar rats were randomly distributed into five (5) groups of five rats, group one were normal rats that were given olive oil as vehicle and were neither induced nor treated, rats in group two were the negative control, which were induced with carbon tetrachloride and no treatment was given, rats I'm group three were the positive control which were induced with carbon tetrachloride and treated with silymarin, rats in group four and five were induced with carbon tetrachloride and treated with ethanol extract of tetrapleura tetaptera in doses of 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg respectively. From the result, there was no significant difference in serum cholesterol concentration (P>0.05), there was no significant difference in serum high density Lipoprotein (HDL) (P>0.05), there was a significant difference in serum low density Lipoprotein (LDL) concentration when compared to the untreated group (P<0.05), there was a significant difference in serum triglyceride (P<0.05). Ethanol extract of tetrapleura tetaptera has positive effect on low density Lipoprotein (LDL). LDL is a bad cholesterol and it's amount was lowered, it was more effective when treated with 500 mg/kg about of tetrapleura tetaptera. 500 mg/kg of ethanol exract of Tetrapleura tetaptera had a positive effect on serum low density lipoprotein, it can be used to lower the level of low density lipoprotein when it's high, LDL is considered a bad cholesterol because too much of it can cause buildups in the arteries which blood flow and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.
