ABSTRACT

Carbon tetrachloride is a well known hepatotoxic chemical agent. Numerous studies have demonstrated that the effect of Ccl4 exposure causes tissue injury in many organs such as, kidney, testis, brain, hearts and lungs via the excessive production of free radicals (Ahmad et al.,1987 and Ganie et al., 2011).Oxidative stress which is a result of Ccl4 toxicity constitutes the mechanism of production and progression of many renal diseases (Singh et al.,2006).Ccl4 induced kidney toxicity was associated with the formation of free radicals and alterations in the antioxidants systems. Plants rich in different phytochemical derivatives such as flavinoids, polyphenols or triterpenes have been reported to play an important role in antioxidative defense to oxidative injuries (Galisteo et al., 2000). Chasmanthera_dependens may contain various bioactive compounds, including alkaloid, flavinoids, saponin and tannins. Some of these phytochemicals which contributes to the plant's potential medicinal properties may have antioxidants properties which helps to neutralise harmful free radicals in the body and may play a role in protecting cells from oxidative damage. Ccl4 induced tissue damage in various organs has been widely used as a model to investigate the ameliorative and protective effect of drugs and plant extract (Ganie et al., 2006).
