ABSTRACT

The study was carried to assess the effectiveness of the plant Anthocleista djalonensis, often known as ewe shapo, as a treatment for sexual dysfunction. 575g of powdered Anthocleista djalonesis stem bark was dissolved in 3.7 litres of ethanol and left for 72 hours, stirring at intervals. The crude extract was then dried in a rotatory evaporator after being filtered and evaporated at 70°C. 25 albino wistar male rats were divided into five groups (n=3); group A received food and water, whereas groups B, C, D, and E received paroxetine 200 mg/kg body weight over the course of seven days to induce sexual dysfunction. 100mg/kg body weight of ethanol extract of Anthocleista djalonensis was administered to group B and 200mg/kg body weight of ethanol extract of Anthocleista djalonensis was administered to group E while 80mg/kg body weight of standard drug (Tadalafil) was administered to Group D and Group E untreated, treatment was done for 21days after which the rats were fasted and sacrificed using sedatives and blood was withdrawn through cardiac puncture. A series of assays such as total protein, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, gamma-glutamyl transferase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and albumin were carried out on the plasma while superoxide dismutase(SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were carried out on the organs. Paroxetine and the ethanol extract of Anthocleista djalonensis were given to Groups B, C, and D. Notably, these groups have lower ALT and AST levels than the control group (Group A), which is significant. This decrease suggests that, when taken along with paroxetine, the ethanol extract may have a protective impact on the liver. This finding supports claims that plant extracts like Anthocleista djalonensis have hepatoprotective abilities.
