ABSTRACT

The study assessed  effect of emotional intelligence on organisational productivity/performance: a  case study of University of Benin,  Benin City. In the course of the investigation, research question were raised and hypothesis formulated to guide the study. The population of interest for the study consists of the members of the non-academic staffs in University of Benin. The population as retrieved from the office of the Registry on Friday, 28th November, 2023 is 5194. A questionnaire was designed as the main instrument for data collection.  A total of 400 questionnaires were distributed and collected. Data administered were analyzed using descriptive statistic, Pearson moment correlation matrix and Ordinary least square regression. The descriptive method described the demography of respondents using frequency and percentage. The Pearson moment correlation matrix was used to examine the close relationship between variables, ordinary least square regression and Breusch-Pagan-Godfrey test was conducted to test for the presence of heteroskedacity in the regression results. The analysis was conducted using the Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS 20) econometric software. The findings revealed that the relationship between self-awareness and organizational performance were negatively significant even at 1% significance level., self-management had a positive and significant relationship with organizational survival even at 1% significance level, social-awareness was a positive and significant predictor of organizational performance at 1% significance level and teamwork and collaboration was a positive and significant predictor of organizational performance at 1% significance level and the relationship between conflict management and organizational performance was negatively insignificant even at 10% significance level Based on the findings, it was recommended that  management of organizations should put measures in place to ensure that employees are emotionally intelligent. Such measures include engaging employees in emotional intelligence training and information programs where they are informed about their emotional intelligence competencies and how they can improve on these competencies to improve their emotional intelligence scores as well as their performance within the organization which will in the long run affect the performance of the organization positively.
