ABSTRACT

There are several claims that aquatic macrophytes such as duckweed (Lemna minor) help in the management of water quality in fish culture. This study analyzed the effects of duckweed Lemna minor on some water quality parametersin the culture of Clarias gariepinus. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design with four treatments namely; T0 (being the control without L. minor),T1 (duckweed all through the culture period), T2 (duckweed first 3 weeks), T3 (duckweed last 3weeks) with three (3) replicates each. A total of 300 fry of Clarias gariepinus were used and evenly distributed in the 12 experimental bowls, 25 fry per treatment. The experiment was conducted for a period of six weeks. Water quality parameters (Temperature, pH, Dissolved Oxygen and Total Ammonia Nitrogen) were measured on a weekly basis. The experiment lasted for 6 weeks after which the results were analyzed using a one way Analysis of variance at 5% probability.

The results showed that T2 (27.87oC)least temperature while T0 (28.36oC) had the highest temperature. T1 (2.49mg/l) had the least dissolved oxygen while T2 (3.92mg/l) had the highest dissolved oxygen. T3 (7.21) had the least pH while T2 (7.31) had the highest pH. T1 (0.20mg/l) had the least Total Ammonia Nitrogen while T0 (2.08mg/l) had the highest Total Ammonia Nitrogen. It was concluded that Lemna minor had significant impact on water quality parameters. It is recommended that duckweed should be incorporated in fish culture.
