ABSTRACT
The study was to investigate the effects of the effect of drug abuse on the health status of undergraduates in the University of Benin. Four (4) research questions were raised and literature of other researchers were reviewed.
The study adopted the descriptive survey research design, data was collected through the aid of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was structured according to the research questions and distributed to sample population of 100 respondents.
The findings of the study revealed that Poor school performance some makes students depressed and which lead to drug abuse, family dysfunctionality and peer pressure significantly influence students’ abuse of drugs in tertiary institutions. Divorce/separated family lead to drug abuse among students as students from one single parental home sometimes feel the impact of the absence of the other parent and will make them indulge in drug abuse. The level of religiosity among students and over controlling of parents leads to drug abuse among students who feel free when they leave home and eventually get into tertiary institutions. Drug Abuse affects the attitude of students and there is a high possibility of students becoming addicted even when using drugs for the first time. Drug abuse interferes with the social function of undergraduate students and impede the daily function of students which can in turn influence their health seeking behaviour. It was however recommended that parents should ensure that their wards are carefully monitored against undue peer pressure; students should ensure that they seek medical advice when they feel depressed or faced by any problems or challenges; and tertiary institutions should ensure that they have good and qualified counsellors that can help advice students against drug abuse.
