ABSTRACT

The effect of different potting media on the growth and yield of Amaranth was carried out at the Screen House of Department of Crop Science, Faculty of Agriculture, and University of Benin, Benin City between March - May 2022 to determine the appropriate 9 potting medium for Amaranth production. The study involved 9 potting media which comprises Topsoil + Cow dung 1:1 (1.5kg +1.5kg), Topsoil + Poultry manure 2:1 (2kg +1kg), Topsoil + oil palm refuse bunch 1:1 (1.5kg +1.5kg), Topsoil + oil palm refuse bunch 2:1 (2kg +1kg), Topsoil + oil palm refuse bunch 1:2 (1kg + 2kg), Topsoil + poultry manure 1:2 (1kg + 2kg), Topsoil + cow dung 2:1 (2kg + 1kg), Topsoil + cow dung 1:2 (1kg + 2kg) and Topsoil + Poultry manure 1:1 (1.5kg + 1.5kg) which were laid out in complete randomized design and replicated three times. Data were collected on yield dry matter, crop growth rate and net assimilation rate. From the result, the yield dry matter, crop growth rate and net assimilation rate were significantly (P<0.5) influenced by potting media. The highest fresh yield, rate were recorded in TS + CD 1:1 and 2:1 however, TS + CD 2:1 had the highest dry matter and growth rate. It is thereby suggested for Amaranth growers.
