ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of crude oil on the growth of Pleurotus tuberregium (a white rot fungus) on agar medium. Agar media inoculated with Pleurotus tuberregium mycellia were contaminated with control (0 %) to 10 % of crude oil and measurements were taken daily for the period of 10 days at room temperature. The results obtained showed that control (0 %) had higher growth than the other concentrations.Growth of the mycellia and heavy metals were determined;. 10 % contaminant had the highest values volumes of heavy metals such as copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) accumulation in the mycellia which were 3.414 mg/kg and 1.211 mg/kg respectively. Control (0 %) contaminant had the lowest values volumes of copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) accumulation in the mycellia which were 0.022 mg/kg and 0.015 mg/kg. The results showed that heavy metals in the mycellia increases as the contamination level was increased. These studies have shown that Pleurotus tuberregium has high bio-absorption potential, which will make the mushroom a very good candidate for mycoremediation.
