ABSTRACT

Crowding is the condition where more people are located within a given space than is considered tolerable from a safety and health perspective. Crowding can be induced either by increasing the number of population or by reducing the size of housing. Crowding can have a range of negative effects on individual’s health and well-being. A lipid profile can provide important information about an individual's risk for developing heart disease, stroke, and other health problems related to high levels of cholesterol and triglyceride. The aim of this study was to investigate the lipid profile of male Wistar Rats exposed to crowding (space limitation). Twentyfive (25) male Wistar Rats were used weighing 160g to 190g. The Rats were randomly divided into five groups with five animals in each group. Group A served as the control group and the other four groups served as test groups. Crowding was induced by reducing the dimensions of the cages for the different test groups. Group A (Control group) were placed in a cage with the dimension 42cm×30cm×24cm. Group B animals were placed in a cage having the same size and dimension as that of the control that is 42cm×30cm×24cm. Group C were placed in a cage that was ¾ the size of the control that is 31.5cm×22.5cm×24cm. Group D animals were placed in a cage half the size of the control that is 30cm×21cm×24cm. Group E animals were placed in a cage that is ¼ the size of the control that is 21cm×15cm×24cm. At the end of the experiment the rats were sacrificed under chloroform anesthesia and blood samples were collected for biochemical analysis of lipid profile. Statistical analysis was done using graph Pad Prism Version 8.0.1. Results were presented as Mean ± S.E.M and Analysis of Variance was used to compare the means of test and control values while a P value of less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results revealed no statistical significance in total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, LDL and VLDL. It was therefore concluded that crowding may have no effect on lipid profile in male Wistar Rats.
